Ingredients:
- 2 lbs beef chuck, cut into 2-inch pieces
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 onion, sliced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece ginger, sliced
- 2 tbsp Chinese five-spice powder
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup rice wine or sherry
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 2 star anise pods
- 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the beef pieces and sear until browned on all sides. Remove the beef and set aside. In the same pot, add sliced onion, minced garlic, and ginger, sautéing until fragrant and softened. Stir in the Chinese five-spice powder, cooking for an additional minute. Return the beef to the pot and pour in the soy sauce, rice wine, and beef broth. Add brown sugar and star anise, stirring to combine. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then cover and reduce heat to low. Let it braise for about 2 to 2.5 hours, or until the beef is tender and easily shredded. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot, garnished with chopped green onions.
